Beverly Strauss is the Co Founder of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. She’s a lifelong horsewoman, former racehorse trainer and owner. Beverly has been rescuing thoroughbreds from kill pens at livestock auctions for years; working with them and places them into new homes as riding horses and sport horses. Through MidAtlantic Horse Rescue Beverly has rescued and placed over 400 thoroughbreds directly, as well as saving another 500+ thoroughbreds for other rescues. Beverly Strauss is also a contributor to the award winning film, "Saving America's Horses", which brings much need awareness to the need for public support of horse rescue.

In addition to the environmental disaster, and the legacy of cruelty this violent industry leaves behind, anyone considering the reopening of horse slaughter must beware of the “$42million in losses attributed directly to horse slaughter” as stated by Henry Skjerven, the former director of the recently debunked Natural Valley Farms, Canada.

Natural Valley Farms was a former beef slaughter plant that had converted over to slaughtering horses. In a public statement by Henry Skjerven, he said "Natural Valley Farms died the day the decision makers chose to kill horses… most notable was our failure with the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency)". As can be noted on the CFIA website, they’re "dedicated to safeguarding food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy." (The CFIA removed the company's operating license)

Proponents of horse slaughter are urging U.S. cattle producers to convert their operations to killing horses, but some meat producers remember all too well Henry Skjerven's cautionary tale. Ted Pohlman of Pohlman’s Meat Processing, Indiana told WTHI TV "if a slaughterhouse starts killing horses.. they’ll lose all their beef and hog business.” Even Pohlman believes many people have too many emotional attachments to horses to consider killing and eating them. Pohlman also stated concerns about the safety of horse meat given the toxic substances they receive.

Never before has there been a need so great to ban together for the greater good in the protection of one of our most precious and historic natural resources, the horse.

The recent lifting of a ban on funding for USDA inspectors at horse slaughter plants in the U.S., fueled by pro slaughter propaganda has led to a proverbial media frenzy with reports based on proponent anecdotes rather than reality, or actual fact checking.

Documented evidence of egregious violations and a lack of enforcement by the USDA in U.S. slaughterhouses led to the defunding of USDA inspections in 2007, but in the absence of federal ban on horse slaughter, our wild and domestic horses continue to be shipped across federal borders where they are slaughtered just as inhumanely to this very day.

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011, S.B. 1176, amends the Horse Protection Act (HPA) to prohibit the sale or transport of horses or equine parts in interstate or foreign commerce with the intent of processing for human consumption. The House version of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is known as H.R. 2966.

Regardless of why, we as a culture, are so repulsed by the thought of consuming horse flesh, and the reasons are many; if we fail to uphold our fundamental moral and social responsibilities, we are in effect dooming the fate of our own humanity.

If you are concerned about the inhumane treatment of animals, or concerned about serious threats to human health, or concerned about sustaining our environment, support Saving America's Horses. Only a federal ban can protect us from the destructive and predatory trade of horse slaughter.

Documentary’s premiere is Sunday March 27 through the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival

(March 19, 2011) – In Defense of Animals (IDA), an international animal protection organization with over 100,000 members, applauds the selection of “Saving America’s Horses – A Nation Betrayed” by the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival. SPECIAL REPORT: China Dog Culling

Hanzhong City, China and the surrounding villages are home to over 300,000 residents and many of these people were also dog owners. In this region of China just days ago, over 37,000 dogs lived in harmony with the people. But due to a recent outbreak of rabies, 12 people have died after being bitten and not receiving medical attention soon enough. Now these people whose loving family pets they shared their lives with have had their lives shattered by a local government order for dog culling. Officials have set out to kill all dogs in the area; friendly, healthy, vaccinated or not.

WFL Endangered Stream Live presents a special report straight from China with the most recent news about the massacre of dogs. Katia Louise catches up with Jill Robinson, Founder and CEO of Animals Asia while on road tour in the UK to broadcast an international appeal for support and help keep this outbreak and the culling of dogs from spreading to other areas. It’s a panic situation with a division of local citizens; those with pets and those empowered by the local government to see that every last dog is killed. Thousands of families are now devastated by the barbaric killing of their pets. Over 30,000 dogs have been killed and more lives are being taken every day.

Zhu Rainbow, PR Manager for Animals Asia streams in from China, stating that the action by the Chinese government is unacceptable and inhumane. Without even the most common knowledge of dogs and the ramifications of rabies, these people did not seek medical attention until too late. (more)

Urgent support is needed!
Groups of people in the city, armed with bats, sticks and poles, are going around the city's streets, brutally beating to death every dog they come across and with the approval of the local authorities. This chaotic and morbid situation strikes a sharp contrast to other regions in China where more enlightened authorities have abandoned such indiscriminate culls in favor of the proven effective methods of trap-neuter-release, rabies vaccination, and dog registration. Local animal welfare groups are working to raise awareness that these proven methods have also been approved by the World Health Authority.

Baby Elephants Face Firing Squad, Must Be Moved- URGENT!

Only 5 days left to save the Malawi elephants. The entire herd - up to 70 elephants, including the babies - will be shot dead if they are not moved immediately.

The elephants - in a desperate search for food and water - are raiding storage areas and feuding with human communities. Villagers are putting down nail-bedded planks and setting snare traps that cut through the elephants' skin - leaving gaping wounds in their legs and trunks.

Three of the elephants have already had their trunks amputated by these vicious snares.

Now authorities plan to execute the entire herd if it is not moved from the area.

Please help save these elephants now - make your emergency donation right away so that IFAW can move them to safety. IFAW has located a perfect spot for the elephants in a park called the Majete Wildlife Reserve. The animals that used to live there were poached to extinction, but the Malawi government has made the new park a protected sanctuary - an ideal place for these threatened elephants.

Exposure in support of Forgotten Shelter Dogs & Cats Suffering Horrific Torture under the Guise of Euthanasia

Seventeen years of winks and nods by officials acting in violation of existing laws meant to protect animals from cruelty. Dogs and cats face slow suffocation while crammed together and left to die. No regulations exist that enforce the protection of these animals from cruelty. In crippling agony, many surviving animals then are dumped at landfills and buried alive. Living stray dogs and cats are being left by officials in trash bins.

'Ol Southern Style takes a look into shelter cruelty with the south as an example of the kind of cruelty that's actually happening across America. In most cases these are county shelters that are funded by US tax payer dollars.

End the cruelty! Boycott Canadian seafood, tourism and the fur industry at large.

"Save the Baby Seals"

Join us together with our guest, the founder of HarpSeals.org Ian Robichaud for an educational and enlightening discussion about the looming slaughter of another 300,000 baby seals.

Every year Canadian fishermen shoot, bludgeon and skin over 300,000 baby seals; many spend hours dying in their own blood. Many are skinned alive.

This is an industrial hunt by the Canadian government and pushed by the Canadian Seafood Corporations. Fishermen earn only 5% of their income this way; the other 95% is earned while they over fish and deplete the N Atlantic oceans. The Canadian fishing industry has displayed little regard for sustainability and they are totally ignoring the direct impact they've had on the complete collapse of the Cod stocks just a few year ago. These fishermen use the baby seals as their scapegoats; an excuse to slaughter hundreds of thousands of baby seals. This is one of the world's most horrific examples of pardoned criminal cruelty.

This slaughter can be stopped and we can stop it. Please listen and take action to help.

Breed Specific Legislation Background: (BSL) claims that a dog’s behavior is dictated by its appearance, and therefore an owner’s treatment of the dog has no effect on the dog’s behavior at all. Breed bans usually require all dogs of a certain appearance be removed; destroyed/ killed.

We're a week away from the Premier Show and the response has been overwhelmingly strong, especially by professionals in the nonprofit sector. This is great news for animals and those who strive to protect them. We’ve even managed to squeeze in a special episode prior to our announced premier in order to meet an immediate local need. Please listen to "Compassion for Billy - Insights".

We’re very excited about the strong showing of interest and support as reflected in the high volume of traffic on our website and show pages. This is a very good sign considering we announced the launching of the show less than two weeks ago and just got our website up last week. In less than 8 hours of airing our first segment, we noted over one hundred downloads with podcast listens continuing to multiply rapidly.

In light of these encouraging and exciting developments, we suggest that guests who haven’t yet reserved a date to have your show aired, to set something up soon.

Please email us to get the next available show date. We’re starting to get busy so requests for dates are now being handled in the order received. Urgency will be considered first when duplicate date requests are received.
